Diesel to be phased out by 2050

According to a study for the European Commission, diesel could be replaced by alternative fuels as soon as 2050.

It has been reported by an expert group on future transport that transport modes will move to a combination of electricity and bio fuels as main options, synthetic fuels as a bridging option, methane as a complementary fuel and LPG as a supplement.

The Commission is currently looking for alternative fuels and sustainable sources by 2050, ensuring the energy demands of the transport sector are met.

There is no single candidate for fuel substitution, but will most likely be a mix of fuels that are sustainable to meet the expected demand.
